The two half-day lectures totalling 6 hours will cover the following topics:
- Basic concepts: period, wavelength, frequency, dB, sound pressure, sound power, sound intensity, A-weighting, sound measurement
- Sound propagation: attenuation along distances, 6 dB rule, reflection, refraction, diffraction, absorption, barriers, reverberation time, room modes
- Human response: human sensation, health effects of noise, speech intelligibility, acceptable noise levels
- Vibration: types of vibration, resonance, damping, Q factor, vibration isolation, transmissibility, isolation efficiency, vibration dose value
- Noise control: control at source and along the path, enclosures and silencers, insulation, absorption materials, insertion loss, mass law, sound reduction index, impact noise isolation
- Vibration control: mass-spring-damper system, vibration isolation design procedure, issues to be considered, different types of isolators, inertia bases
