E-survey on the Development of BEAM Plus F&B

Hong Kong’s thriving Food & Beverage (F&B) sector, renowned for blending Cantonese and global flavors, has experienced remarkable growth, expanding from 8,926 restaurants in 2013 to 12,630 in 2022. However, this growth has come at an environmental cost. The sector contributes approximately 30% of municipal solid waste and significantly increases carbon emissions. The COVID-19 pandemic further worsened the issue with a surge in disposable packaging usage.

To support Hong Kong’s 2050 carbon neutrality goal, the BEAM Plus F&B framework has been introduced to promote sustainable practices, with a focus on waste reduction, energy efficiency, and responsible sourcing. This initiative aims to strike a balance between economic growth and environmental sustainability, ensuring Hong Kong retains its status as a global culinary hub while fostering eco-conscious practices.

BEAM Society Limited has engaged a consultant to conduct a comprehensive study and develop an environmental assessment method for the F&B sector — “BEAM Plus F&B Version 1.0” — to better address the needs of stakeholders.

Stakeholder engagement is a key milestone in developing this new assessment tool. Your input and experiences are invaluable in shaping the framework and measures that will encourage participation and minimize the environmental impacts of Hong Kong's F&B sector.

The questionnaire will take approximately 5–10 minutes to complete. For more background on this initiative, please refer to the reading material HERE.
