Introduction

The global urgency for carbon neutrality places immense pressure on the construction industry. Innovative materials are needed to release the pressure, and biochar offers a carbon-negative solution. However, its high porosity and water absorption can negatively impact concrete performance. To overcome this, NAMI brought us a new biochar-based core-shell aggregate (CSA) encapsulates biochar in a dense cementitious shell, enabling significant carbon sequestration while ensuring the needed mechanical integrity.

Other than introducing biochar-based core-shell aggregate (CSA), NAMI also developed an advanced eco-permeable material using green material technologies and a hybrid matrix system combining cement hydration and geopolymerisation. This permeable material, made from over 70% locally recycled materials and advanced green technologies, achieves exceptional infiltration rates of over 20,000 mm/hr.
