An environmental policy, endorsed by directorate level management,

is a key element of such a programme. ISO 14004 [

6]

sets out

guidelines for establishing an environmental management system

(EMS) and specifies the key features of an effective environmental

policy as:

i.

Being appropriate to the nature, scale and environmental

impacts of the organisation’s activities, products and services;

ii.

A commitment to comply with relevant environmental

legislation;

iii.

A commitment to continual improvement and pollution

prevention;

iv.

Providing a framework for setting and reviewing

environmental objectives and targets;

v.

Being documented and communicated to all employees,

suppliers, and customers.
